Some of the questions we get a lot are about actually designing a custom home. Where do we start? What’s possible? Do we ever have to say no?
Designing a custom home is extremely exciting. We offer design services, so we often get to be a part of this part of the home building process. It also allows us to have a dialogue with the future home owners about their expectations, and the best way to meet them.
Creating a budget for your custom built home is extremely important. Your budget will determine not only the square footage, but all of the finishing details and extras you can afford. Gone are the days where builders simply quote a price for square foot. With so many options available to homeowners – like showers that can range from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars – a standard price per square foot just isn’t possible anymore.
The best place to start is creating a list of the things you would like. How many bedrooms and bathrooms, what type of kitchen, in-ground pool or hot tub, or whether or not there’s a home theatre room. Once you know what pieces you’d like to see, the budget will start to dictate any changes or compromises that may need to be made with the finishing details or rooms to make your dream a reality.
We work with many types and sizes of lots – so there’s very little we haven’t seen. From planning for a build on the side of a mountain or lakefront property, to working with an expansive vineyard, designing for your lot is important. You want to use the natural features of the land to make the most of your house.
It’s rare that something isn’t possible. With enough money and expertise, pretty much anything can be accomplished. However, most of us are on a budget. This usually means being prepared to make compromises. Instead of a massive master suite, you may have to shave a bit off to make room for the home theatre room in order to fit everything in under cost.
No matter what your dream home looks like, we can design a custom house you’ll be proud to call home. Give us a call and find out what we can do for you.
